Can you get a HELOC if you're self-employed?

Yes. Instead of digging up tax returns, you can connect your business bank account and let your deposits show your income.

Retirement, pension and Social Security income count too, and a household member's deposits to the home can help.

How is self-employed income counted?

Your income is your business deposits minus your expenses. With 680+ credit, expenses count as the lower of your real costs or 50% of deposits.

Example: $300,000 in deposits and $200,000 in costs. Real costs leave $100,000, but at 50% your income counts as $150,000.

Self-employed HELOC questions

Do I need tax returns?

Not usually. Connecting your business bank account can verify your income.

How is my income figured?

Business deposits minus expenses. With 680+ credit, expenses count as the lower of your actual costs or 50% of deposits.

Do I need to prove I own the business?

Usually it's verified automatically. If not, a K-1 or operating agreement does it.

Will checking hurt my credit?

No. Seeing your numbers takes no credit pull. A soft pull comes only when you apply.
